Manhattan
Rye or bourbon whiskey with sweet vermouth and bitters, served with a cocktail cherry — the New York bar classic from the 1870s (No. 10 in the Drinks International ranking 2025).

| 5 cl | Rye whiskey (or bourbon) |
| 2 cl | Sweet vermouth (rosso) |
| 2 Dashes | Angostura bitters |
| nach Bedarf | Ice cubes |
| 1 Stück (Garnitur) | Cocktail cherry |
Preparation
- 1 Combine the whiskey, vermouth and bitters with plenty of ice in a mixing glass.
- 2 Stir cold for about 30 seconds.
- 3 Strain into a chilled martini glass.
- 4 Garnish with a cocktail cherry.
Notes & tips
Note: Contains alcohol — not suitable for children or pregnant women. With rye, the drink is spicier (classic); with bourbon, somewhat sweeter. For a "Perfect Manhattan", use half sweet and half dry vermouth.
